In the Christian faith, there’s a common tendency to reduce it to a list of do’s and don’ts, turning it into a set of moralistic rules rather than a transformative relationship with Jesus. This approach, though well-intentioned, often misses the point and can lead to spiritual exhaustion and frustration. Why? Because at its core, Christianity is not about simply following rules but about embodying the life and character of Jesus.
The first reason moralisms don’t work is that they focus on external behavior without addressing the heart. Jesus Himself confronted the Pharisees on this point, highlighting that they were like “whitewashed tombs” – beautiful on the outside but hollow within (Matthew 23:27). Rules and regulations may guide our actions, but they cannot truly transform our hearts. Genuine change flows from within, where the Holy Spirit works to reshape us in the image of Christ, allowing us to bear His love, patience, kindness, and humility.
Another issue with moralism is that it often leads to self-righteousness or shame. When faith becomes about measuring up to a set of rules, people fall into the trap of either pride or despair. Those who seem to succeed in keeping the rules may develop a sense of superiority, while those who struggle can feel inadequate or hopeless. In contrast, Jesus’ message is one of grace. He calls us to recognize our need for Him, not to compare ourselves with others or create a hierarchy of moral achievement. The Christian life is about abiding in Him, not checking off a list.
Reducing Christianity to moralism minimizes the gospel’s power and beauty. Jesus didn’t come to impose a new legalistic system but to bring a new way of life, a life marked by love, compassion, and mercy. When we emphasize the rules over relationship, we risk missing the essence of Jesus’ teachings: “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:35). True faith is contagious, not because of rigid adherence to rules but because of the unmistakable presence of Jesus’ love in our lives.
Ultimately, Christianity is about transformation through relationship. The more we draw close to Jesus, the more His character is revealed in us. As we grow in love for God and others, we naturally begin to reflect His nature. This is a transformation that cannot be achieved by moralism but only by the Spirit’s work in our hearts. So, let us embrace the beauty of the Christian life by seeking Jesus Himself, allowing His love to shape us, and exhibiting His nature to a world in need of true hope.
Blessings!
How true this is!! Not too difficult either… when we pray, read His word, obey and abide in Him…. it’s a wonderful life!
