Manage Thyself

Financial management, time management, pain management, health management, relationship management. There are so many management areas offered to us that they seem to go on and on, almost ad nauseum. There is always someone who seems to have a handle on how you can better manage some aspect of your life. Just in case you can’t manage on your own, the government will happily assist you through their multitude of regulations.

“Do this. Don’t do that. Go here. Go there. Vote for this person. Never vote for that person.” How can any of us handle these plethora of pundits or experts who seem to have all the answers?

Maybe I have become a cynic. Maybe I have become just a stubborn, old man who doesn’t like to be told what to do or how to think. Or maybe I have had enough life experiences to realize that people come, people go; viewpoints rise, viewpoints fall. No matter what you do or how you choose to live, someone always thinks they have a “better mousetrap” or more complete knowledge on the affairs of your life. And they are always quick to let you know.

The reality is that if you do not take control of your own life, someone else will seek to do this for you. If you have not created your own life’s goals, complete with your own priorities, another will sooner or later seek to impose an agenda upon you. You have a choice to make. You can blindly follow others or create your own future.

What is it that you want to do? Where is it that you want to go? What dreams have you had, even as a young person, that have yet to be fulfilled?

There is a classic line by Dr. Grant in the movie, “Jurassic Park III”.

“I have a theory that there are two kinds of boys. There are those that want to be astronomers, and those that want to be astronauts.”

If you are an astronomer and are comfortable watching the stars and planets, that’s okay. But if you are an astronaut, don’t let others squeeze you into their mould. After all, these are your dreams, your goals, and your life to live out. Why not choose to be an astronaut and see where it takes you.

Blessings!
